Nina Shirey has been involved in the barrel racing world for as long as she can remember. She started riding before she could walk, growing up in a life shaped by horses, hard work, and long days in the barn. Today, horses are still at the center of everything she does. It’s not just a hobby; it’s her and her family's lifestyle, and it’s all she’s ever known.
From the beginning, Brad and Jenna, have pushed Nina to work for everything she earns. Faster horses were never handed to her; instead, she had to prove herself and build a solid foundation first. That meant riding horses that weren’t always easy, but those challenges shaped her into a better and more confident rider. Each horse taught her something different, and through patience and persistence, Nina has developed a versatility to be proud of.
Having a family so deeply involved in barrel racing has been one of Nina’s greatest blessings. Brad, her father, has played a huge role in shaping not only the rider she is today, but the person as well. His knowledge of the sport, willingness to help others, and unwavering support of Nina’s dreams have made him both her biggest mentor and role model.
Life for the Shirey family revolves around their horses and animals. With a full barn and busy schedules, caring for them is simply part of everyday life. Brad balances running multiple businesses right up until it’s time to make a run, and despite the constant hustle, the family finds joy in doing it all together, whether they’re at home or traveling down the road.
Some of Nina’s favorite memories come from being on the road with her family. One that really sticks with her is the 2024 BFA SuperStakes, where she got to compete on Roaring Angele, the first horse she ever trained with the help of her dad. Being there, running that horse against some of the best in the game, made the trip extra special and is a big reason the BFA means so much to her every year. Another moment she’ll never forget was being at the Patriot and watching The American, especially seeing Brandon Cullins win the barrel race, that was one of her top moments to witness. One of her most memorable runs came in 2023 at Youth World in the Redemption Round with Gigi (WhatevaFiresYouUp). After tipping barrels in both go rounds, it felt like everything was riding on that last run, and Gigi showed up, laying down a 14.4 in the Purdue Arena to win the round and push them into the finals.
When it comes to breeding, Nina already has a clear vision. Her ideal cross is Frenchman’s Guy on a Dash Ta Fame mare, a combination known for its strong foundation and ideal barrel racing build. One of their horses, Maui (KF Famous Frenchman), is that exact cross, and to Nina, he perfectly blends speed and turn.
Nina has some big goals, and is excited for what the future holds. When she turns 18, she plans to begin her pro rodeo journey, with a long term goal of qualifying for the NFR on horses she has trained and raised herself.
At just 15 years old, Nina Shirey is building a bright future based on discipline, patience, and a deep respect for the horse. Every run, every setback, and every long day in the barn is shaping the competitor she is becoming. With the support of her family and a clear vision for where she’s headed, Nina’s journey is only getting started; and the foundation she’s built shows us the road ahead will be one worth watching.
